We arrived at my father’s cabin sometime later. Breaker checked all the doors and windows to make sure everything was locked. I went to the kitchen and splashed my face with water from the faucet.

I was breathing heavily. That brush with death was scary. It was overwhelming. Neither the leather jacket nor the boots I was wearing could have prepared me for the kind of stuff I would have to face if I ran in this world with men like Breaker and his friends.

I thought I could somehow toughen up and prove myself to Breaker, maybe even to the rest of his MC. I was being foolish. I wasn’t made of that kind of material.

I heard Breaker enter the kitchen behind me.

“We’re fine here, for now. Are you okay?”

I looked at him over my shoulder.

“We could have died today. That guy looked like he was ready to shoot.”

He came towards me, and despite everything, I really hoped that he would touch me. He was the only one who could make me feel better.

“I wasn’t going to let him hurt you, Callie,” he said.

I turned to face him, leaning on the kitchen sink.

“I don’t know why I trust you, but I do.”

His eyes traveled all over me again. My jacket, my legs, my boots, swinging up to my breasts, then back to my mouth and eyes.

“It suits you. This look,” he said.

Could this be the first compliment he gave me? I nearly laughed with relief.

“I’m not sure I can carry it off.”

“You can. You can carry off anything. You’re beautiful,” he said.

I took a hurried step towards him. Maybe I was getting too ahead of myself, but this felt like it was my opportunity. My only opportunity.

I reached for him, but all I could manage was touching his face gently.

“Callie, we can’t do this,” he said gruffly. However, I was relieved to find that he didn’t move my hand away. Little miracles!

“Why not?” I murmured.

“Because things are too complicated right now, with Daniel and…”

I didn’t want him thinking about Daniel. At least not for some time. I wished I knew how to make him feel good, and I wished I had some experience so I would have known what to do.

“But you do want me, don’t you?” I interrupted him.

Breaker looked deeply into my eyes. I brushed my fingers on his neck. He caught my hand, and I was sure he was going to push me away, but he didn’t. Instead, he brought my fingers to his mouth and kissed them.

Butterflies fluttered to life in my belly! I’d only ever read about them. I didn’t think something like that could be real. That a man could make me feel this safe and secure. I had never viewed sex as something a girl could enjoy, but for the first time, I wanted it as much as a man did. Maybe even more.

I took off my jacket as he watched me closely.

“Callie…” he tried stopping me again while I took off my boots.

“Please don’t, Breaker.
